What Reformed Means
Like many other denominations, Reformed churches have historical roots in the Protestant Reformation that swept through Europe beginning in the sixteenth century. In the United States, Reformed denominations include the Reformed Church in America, the Christian Reformed Church and the Presbyterian Church.

Reformed churches

  • Believe in the sovereignty of God – that God’s power is without limit

  • Adhere to this practice: Ecclesia reformata semper reformanda est – A Reformed church must ever be reforming itself in accordance with the word of God

  • Follow Scripture alone (“sola Scriptura”) as the only rule of faith and practice and stress the unique authority and sole sufficiency of the Word of God

  • Believe that Christ is the head (universal bishop) of the church, that church officers (ministers, elders and deacons) are to represent Christ in their actions and decisions

  • Accept the three historic creeds of Christianity (the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed) along with several doctrinal statements called “confessions.” Among them are the Heidelberg Catechism, the Belgic Confession, the Canons of the Synod of Dor,and the Belhar Confession.

  • Follow liturgies (forms and orders of worship) which focus on the praise and worship of God and which emphasize the transforming power of the Word of God

  • Celebrate two sacraments: baptism and the Lord’s supper

  • Emphasize the importance of personal piety – a  personal experience of God linked to a passionate devotion to God – which shapes all aspects of the believer’s life
